Harry Potter ABCs – DS106 Assigment C

Assignment: This assignment said to compile images to represent each letter of the alphabet within a chosen subject area or theme. Create a collage. Here is the link to the original assignment if you want to check it out for yourself: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/a-z-photo-collage/

I have been working on this since August and it is finally done! I decided my theme would be Harry Potter and taking that further, I decided that since it was Harry Potter, I would make the pictures move (since that’s what they do in the movies and books). I ran into a couple of problems while making it, so instead of a collage, I remixed the assignment and made 26 individual GIFS  and below each of them I provided an explanation of what each one is. If for some reason, the gif is not playing, click on the picture and it will load.

Albus

A – Albus Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore is possibly one of the most mysterious and most loved characters. He serves as the Hogwarts Head Master and looks after Harry carefully. As part of his back story  it is revealed that he is one of the leaders of the Order of the Pheonix, a group designed to battle and attempt to stop the series antagonist, Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore was killed by Severus Snape in the later part of the series.

black, sirius

B – Sirius Black

Sirius Black is Harry Godfather. Sirius Black, nicknamed Padfoot, is the last heir to the House of Black, a once notable pure-blood Wizarding family. He is the brother of Regulus Arcturus Black and a cousin of Bellatrix Lestrange. Sirius is framed and arrested for the murder of 12 muggles and Peter Pettigrew and sent to Azkaban prison. After his escape he takes on the care of Harry and dies later in the series after being struck by a curse from Bellatrix.

cho-chang

C- Cho Chang

Cho Chang was a popular students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was sorted into the Ravenclaw House and served as the seeker for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. During her fifth year at Hogwarts she began dating Cedric Diggory, who was killed during the Tri – Wizard tournament, leaving Cho devastated. During her sixth year at Hogwarts, she joined Dumbledore’s Army and under some mistletoe after a D.A. meeting, initiated a kiss with Harry whom she soon began dating. After many arguments and lack of discussions involving Cedric’s death, Cho and Harry broke up, not even speaking her last year at Hogwarts.

doby

D – Dobby – The House Elf

Dobby the House elf is who I chose to represent D. Dobby is quite possibly my favorite character because of his unintended humor.  Dobby was a house elf who served the Malfoys, dark wizards who treated him cruelly. Dobby was freed after Harry tricked Mr. Malfoy and Dobby went on to work in the kitchens at Hogwarts. Dobby soon became the companion to Harry, Ron, and Hermione and while helping them escape from the Death Eaters, he was wounded by Bellatrix Lastrange. Dobby died a few days later and was buried by Harry in the garden’s of Shell Cottage (a safe house for wizards). After burying him, Harry carved a rock to mark Dobby’s grave saying: “Here lies Dobby, a free elf.”

expelliarmous

E – Expelliarmus

For E, I chose a spell, Expelliarmus, which is a disarming curse used by wizards in battle to give them the upper hand while the opposing wizard is disarmed. In the GIF i have made, Snape is using the curse against Harry during a defense against the Dark Arts class.

fred-weasley

F- Fred Weasley

F is for Fred Weasley. Fred was the identical twin brother to George and 1 of 7 Weasley kids. Fred served as a beater for the Gryfindor Quiddditch team and he and his brother were incredible pranksters, they even opened up their own Joke Shop in Diagon Alley. While defending Hogwarts in an attack during the Second Wizarding War, Fred was killed during an explosion.

gringottsG – Gringotts

Gringotts is the wizarding bank in Diagon alley where all of hte BRitish Witches and Wizards store there money and valuables. The centuries-old bank is run by goblins, and they alone know the secrets of the twisting underground passages and the enchantments (and creatures) in place to defend against intruders.

hogwarts

H – Hogwarts

Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry is where everything about the Harry Potter world takes place. Hogwarts is built in a forested area, directly next to a fairly large lake, in the highlands of Scotland. The main entrance to Hogwarts is a set of huge oak doors which face more or less toward the west. British wizarding students arrive at the castle via a train called the Hogwarts express.

invisibility-cloak_a_GIFSou

I – Invisibility Cloak

An Invisibility Cloak is a cloak of silvery grey material that, when worn, makes the covered parts of the wearer invisible. The weave is so fine that an Invisibility Cloak is “strange to the touch, like water woven into material”Invisibility Cloaks are rare and valuable. Invisibility cloaks are rare and valuable and Harry inherited one from his father, James Potter which was given to him anonymously by Dumbledore his first year at Hogwarts. Harry kept the invisibility cloak throughout the course of the series.

j.k. rowling

J – J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling is not a character in the series, but without her, the series would not exist. Rowling is the writer of the 7 books of the Harry Potter series, 3 accompanying books, and her newest work, The Casual Vacancy. Her work with Harry Potter made her famous and fans a patiently awaiting a new series from her.

killing curse

K – Killing Curse

The Killing Curse causes instant death in a flash of green light, usually leaving no sign of physical damage or of the cause of death that would be detectable to a Muggle autopsy. Harry is the only person to have ever survived the Killing Curse, and it is one of the few unforgivable curses. In this picture, Bellatrix Lastrange is using the killing curse to kill Harry Godfather, Sirius Black.

neville

L – Neville Longbottom

Neville is a staunch friend of Harry Potter’s, and a true Gryffindor. It was Neville who protected the weak and led the resistance at Hogwarts while Harry, Ron and Hermione were hunting Horcruxes (pieces of Lord Voldemort’s soul). He remembered how Harry’s dogged assertiveness gave others hope and encouraged the same thing amongst the beleaguered students. In the final battle at Hogwarts, it is Neville who utterly defied Voldemort, he drew Gryffindor’s sword from the hat, and slew Nagini – the last Horcrux.

malfoy

M – Draco Malfoy

Draco Malfoy is the son and only child of  Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy and was a student at Hogwarts in the same year as Harry Potter. He is a rival of Harry, actively trying to undermine him in any way he can. Draco began to work for the Death Eaters at an early age, but he was somewhat of a whiner, so Lord Voldemort did not care for him. Over the years, he and Harry gained a mutual respect for one another, but they never actually became friends.

nagini

N – Nagini

Nagini was a large Boa who spent his days in the care of Lord Voldemort. He served as a pet to the Dark Lord but also as a Horcrux after Voldemort split his soul.

potter harry

Harry Potter is infamous in the wizarding world. During the first Wizarding War, his parents were killed in their home, but Harry was the only person to survive. He was rescued by Hagrid, but was given to his aunt and uncle, The Dursley’s to be raised as a normal British boy. When Harry arrives in the wizarding war, he is quickly taken under the wing of the Weasley’s where he finds the most comfort. Harry fights in the Second Wizarding War trying to defeat Voldemort. After leaving Hogwarts, Harry marries Ginny Weasley.

QuiddithAnimation

Q – Quidditch

Quidditch, “the sport of warlocks,” is the premier sport of the wizarding world. Everyone follows Quidditch. Quidditch is a fast, dangerous, exciting game in which two teams flying on broomsticks compete for points scored by throwing a ball–the Quaffle–through hoops on either end of a large grassy pitch. In this picture, Harry and Malfoy are battling to catch the golden snitch to win the game.

ron weasley

R – Ron Weasley

Ron is Harry’s best friend. In this picture Harry and Ron meet for the first time and Harry shows Ron his lightning bolt scar. Ron has a terrible fear of spiders and get queezy if one comes around. Ron stands by Harry for most of the series, until he believes Harry, and Ron’s girlfreind, Hermionie are sneaking around behind his back. Ron later changes his mind when he hears breaking news about the wizarding war. After leaving Hogwarts, Ron marries Hermionie.

snape

S – Severus Snape

Snape is built up to be the primary antagonist of the series until the final chapters. He is the potions instructor at Hogwarts and we later find out that he is Dumbledore’s most loyal companion and the one who looks after Harry the most. In this scene, Snape is revealing the grim task that Dumbledore had given to him and details his affection for Harry’s mom and for Harry. HE tells Harry that he has his mother’s eyes and Harry learns that Snape is one of the bravest people at the castle.

Sybill (Professor) Trelawney

T- Sybill Trelawney

Trelawney was a professor of Divination at Hogwarts. She made many prophesies about Lord Voldemort’s return and his aim to kill Harry.

Umbridge

U – Dolores Umbridge

By order of the Ministry, she was installed as Defense against the Dark Arts Professor, and then later as Hogwarts Headmistress after she filed a bogus charge and had Dumbledore removed.  In all of these positions at Hogwarts she had enormous power over the students, teachers, and the curriculum, which she wielded despotically. Her time at Hogwarts was characterized by cruelty and abusive punishments against students, and because of her interfering and condescending ways she was generally hated by most students and teachers alike.

Voldemort

V – Voldemort

Tom Riddle, later known as Voldemort, was an orphan wizard taken in under the care of Dumbledore. His time at Hogwarts led him to be known as the most talented student to ever attend the school and he was seemingly polite and handsome. Tom however, sought power and used his knowledge from the school to become the greatest dark wizard to ever walk. He embraced the Dark arts and spawned 2 great wizarding Wars; the first killing hundreds, including Harry’s parents, and the second in an attempt to end Hogwarts and kill Harry. Voldemort was wounded after a long battle at the castle. He died with the destruction of the last part of his soul, which was trapped inside the horcrux of his pet snake Nagini.

WAND

W -Wand

A wand is a tool used by wizards and witches. It serves as a weapon of protection and allows them to cast spells as needed. Each student must have a wand before arriving at Hogwarts. Students would go to Olivanders on Diagon Alley and let the wand choose them. Harry’s wand, was the brother wand to Lord Voldemort’s.

Xenophilius Lovegood

X – Xenophilius Lovegood

Xenophilius is Luna’s father and editor of the Quibbler magazine. His wife died when their only child was nine years old, and he raised his daughter by himself. He is likely the source of his daughter’s eccentric beliefs, although he is often correct in his assumptions. He believed in the existence of the Deathly Hallows and supported Harry in The Quibbler when few others would.

yaxley - death eater

Y – Yaxley

Yaxley was a wizard and death eater who worked for the ministry of magic. He fought in the first wizarding war and after Voldemort took over the ministry of magic, he was promoted to the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. He fought few battles in the second wizarding war and his fate after the battle of Hogwarts is uncertain.

Zabini

Z -Zabini

Blaise Zabini was a student at Hogwarts, He was sorted into the Slytherin House and quickly befriended Malfoy and his followers.

There are so many things in the World of Harry Potter to explore, it was hard for me to choose which scenes to use. I am very please with how this turned out. Most of the GIFs you see, I made (either in Photoshop or by using the free program gifsoup.com). I got all of the images and clips via creative commons and any gifs I did not make, came from here as well. This project was very ambitious and took me forever to complete, it seemed like, but now it is done, and I am very happy with how it turned out.

The perks of being a wallflower: Lurking and Trolling in online spaces

In my English 3241 class, the entire class is based around the usefulness of internet resources both inside the classroom and out. We have spent a lot of time talking about the “Study Smarter – not Harder” concept and we have played around with the idea of remixing. I had the opportunity to “lurk” on one of the twitter chats about literacy and I was amazed at the amount of information and knowledge people can pack into 128 characters or less. The idea of “Remix” terrifies both students and teachers alike and the concept is a relatively new one being brought into the classroom. Or so we’ve thought. People have been remixing since the dawn of time; passing stories, songs, and concepts from one artist to another.

When I think about remix, my mind automatically goes to Shakespeare . Shakespeare bored stories from the Romans, made them popular and has become the most iconic play-write in history. Since Shakespeare’s time, many artists have taken his ideals and transformed them into other works. Just think about how many love movies mimic the story of Romeo and Juliet (West Side Story, Beauty and the Beast, The Notebook, and Footloose, just to name a few.) The artists that composed these works took elements of Shakespeare’s works remixed them and created award winning works.

Being a part of the Twitter Chat was truly enlightening for me. I was given tons of resources to use in the classroom and made many new friends in the education community. I cannot wait to participate in other chats and expand my new learning network even further. Literacies chats take place on Thursday nights at 7pm est. To view the twitter chat, check out the following link: http://literacieschat.wordpress.com/

In addition to learning the ins and outs of Twitter, we were encouraged to expand what we have been learning in the classroom into the world around us. The assignment was to go on a popular news website and comment on a story in order to spark some sort of discussion. I was so excitred about this because I subscribe to many online news websites including one form my hometown called the Cherokee County Herald. I found a news story that I thought really interesting and jumped on the message boards immediately because itwas such a hot button issue.

Just to give you a little bit of background about where I come from. I used to live in Cherokee County Alabama in a little town just across the Georgia Line. For years the county administration has been pushing for more efficient energy sources, such as biofuels, solar panels, and wind turbines. Finally a government agency has realized their efforts and has decided to help out by placing wind turbines in the empty fields in Leesburg, Alabama. Unfourtunately, the people who have been the biggest proponents of the alternate energy sources, are not happy about the new addition to the beautiful fields.

Below I included a screen shot of my comments on the subject as well as the link to the full article. It took a few weeks, but this morning someone finally commented on what I said. Their opinions were quite different from mine and chose to tell me how wrong my view was. It was intersting to read all of the different opions of such a hot button issue. I really enjoyed this activity, and though I won’t talk about them here, I carried it over to other news sites as well. I was able to take whatever side I chose and be whoever  I wanted to be behind the keyboard.

I think that this would be a fun acivity to do in the classroom, especially as an introductory activity to the idea of media in the classroom. I think it would be a nice was to introduce the ise of technology and allow the opportunity to discuss online etiquette, appropriate lengths of postings, and even various ways of posting. I think the idea of “trolling” has gotten a bad rep, but i think students can learn so much simply from watching and reading other people’s comments.

My DS106 choice assignment was to create a collogue on a sillouette of my head representing the things that went around in my head every day. This is what i came up with. All photos used with permission by creative commons. The background is made up of a montage of Harry Potter photos. I chose this because Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling inspired me become an English major. Coming up from the bottom, the foreground images are all things that I work with daily. On my ponytail, I included the image of the International Gold Key society. The GK society is an international honor society which I am involved in and I am starting to become a more prominent member of. The next 2 things (although I am not exactly happy with how they look on the collogue) are pretty important to me. I put a wedding dress first because I am continuously planning my (hopefully soon to come) wedding. Above that I placed the biggest loser logo. While, this may seem like a strange, this becomes my inspiration as I struggle with my goal to get healthy again. Moving up the ladder, I put an image of the SMURFS. This kind of became an inside joke between my friends and myself. They call me a surf because I am so short….very funny I know. Also I placed this because I have a rally cool collection of both vintage and new smurf toys.  Above that I placed a bold, brightly colored word to catch attention: LOVE. Love is the basis of all and makes everything worth while. I had to put the Home Depot logo on here because I work here so much of my attention is focused on my job. Finally, on the top of the collogue, I place a graduation cap and a diploma. This is on the top because at this point in my life it is the most important thing to me. I cannot wait to graduate and see the benefits of all of the hard work I have asserted over the last few years.

I was able to compile the collogue using Photoshop. I used different textures and opacities in order to get the desired effects. I am trying to retweak the lower half of the collogue. I feel like the lower half of the picture is just kind of there. It doesn’t flow in with the other images as much as I was hoping. Obviously, I have hundreds of things that go through my head everyday, it was very hard for me to pin point exactly what I wanted to include in it.

Twinkle Twinkle Inner Child – This I believe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3U3ShZxrjcY&feature=youtu.be

Below is my composing log for my journey creating this video. It’s kind of funny when you realize how many times I changed my mind not only when deciding WHAT to do my essay about, but also HOW to put it together. All in all though, I am very pleased with the way it turned out.

August 30,2012 2:00 p.m.
I have looked through many essays on various websites. I don’t have a definite topic yet. I am thinking about maybe a “I believe in the power of love…”

Maybe a you are beautiful just the way you are….

Format: Windows Movie Maker

Interview with married couples…. maybe…

Use Video clips and sound clips and music.

August 30, 2012 4:30 p.m.
Driving home today I decided to scrap all of my original ideas. I came up with the idea of a comic book called the Adventures of Imagination man (which I will make in photoshop.) I will upload pages from comic book to movie maker and have people perform voice overs for characters. I will tell my story in between scenes in the comic book. It will shift back and forth between real – time and comic book.

Open: Me sitting on a stool telling what I believe… I believe in the power of imagination…blah..blah…blah…

after 1 minute cut to comic book with narration and voice over

September 2, 2012 3:54p.m.
I’ve been toying with various ideas all weekend and I have a good start on where I would like to be with this. Set up: documentary style. Talk, video, talk, narration and stills, end, play video song.

*include clips from various cartoons during imagiantion speech

I found a really cool video dealing with this topic on youtube: Mr. Rogers

Our imaginations are our most powerful tools and that allows each of us to be creative and unique individuals with varying tastes and personalities. without our imaginations, we might as well live in a world of no color.

Last night I uploaded my essay to my wordpress blog. It was great to get some feedback from some people other than my immediate family. That helped because some people are brutally honest. lol

After some very frustrating technical difficulties with both YouTube and WordPress and my file sizes, I finally got my project uploaded and ready to go.

September 18, 2012
It’s been a week since I completed my DMC. After going back and looking at my composing logs and my video again. I realize some things that I would have changed. 1) I should probably Actually pin point the things that I believe in.It was very hard to think of a topic for my video. 2) keeping a journa of my progress eliminated a lot of the stress of creating the project because I was able to look back at what I had accomplished and I was able to see what I needed to accomplish. I will add more details from now on though. 3) My video would have been much better (in my opion) if I would have had the time to go and take video of the children I used. 4) I procrastinated A LOT. By doing so, I stressed myslef the night before trying to get everything finished on time. Finally, I really enjoyed putting this project together and I plan to start using a composing process such as this to help me get my ideas on paper before composing them into a paper or video. Also I found that by keeping detailed notes, I was able to walk away from the project when I got stressed out by it, and then go back and start back like I had never stopped.

This I Believe Essay

15 years ago, I was 5 and I was walking into my first day of kindergarten.   I had on my shiny red cowgirl boots, my hair in pigtails, and my brand new Barbie backpack in my hands. I thought was so cool. Kindergarten, although I didn’t realize it at the time, taught me things that I still use today. Things like, always share your cookies because the person beside you probably has chocolate chip, don’t hit each other, afternoon naps are ok, and always hold hands and stick together with those closest to you. Thinking about the fact that the hardest part of my day was trying to sleep during naptime and coloring inside the lines makes me laugh sometimes.  I am also forced to reflect upon the most important aspect I learned in kindergarten: ALWAYS let your imagination soar. Let it help you to create games and stories and pictures, let the jungle gym be your castle and your best friend be prince charming rescuing you from the evil dragon that lives beneath the slide. Let the sea saw be a pirate ship rocking on the rough waters of the seas and let Dr. Suess offer you great philosophies.

Throughout elementary school and into middle school, I began to see myself grow and mature. I had many exciting new experiences and I began to see how much one summer could change your entire life. I remember my first day high school like it was yesterday. I remember being intimidated by the upperclassmen and overwhelmed by the loads of homework that were piling up. My years in high school had ups and downs but were fulfilling both socially and academically. At my high school graduation ceremony, my class was told “leave behind the things that are not important and bring forward with you the lessons that will be the working parts of your life.” For me I guess that would have been my Barbie backpack and my shiny red cowgirl boots but along with those simple objects came life lessons that are important 15 years later.

I believe that you should always embrace what you learned in kindergarten. Always remember your manners, share your cookies, stay within the lines and more than anything let your imagination soar!  I believe that as adults we sometimes forget how to live. We think we are too old to play on the playground and find dancing to the music within our own heads silly. I always try to remember the five year old girl that I once was. I wear my shiny red cowboy boots and put my hair in pigtails and although the Hot Pink Barbie backpack has long since been retired, I still believe that by embracing what we left behind all those years ago, our futures can be brighter, more fulfilling. I believe that finding my five year old self allows me to be a better thinker, a better creator, a better writer, and hopefully a better person.
